Question:

Vinal Siding Question Please?

We are redoing the siding on our house, and have a question. We are up to the large picture window at the front of the house, and the bottom piece of siding is about 1 inch below the window. We need to cover it somehow. Should we centre the siding, and cut it out (to anchor it on each side), or should we just continue with our usual pattern, and have siding come from each side of the window, but have no way to anchor it down). Thank you.

  1. Have the siding come in from each side of the window and use a 100% clear silicone to hold it in place.

  2. iou can put caulking or liquid nail in the bottom lock of the 1 inch piece if there is no nailing spot on that particluar course of siding but you need to keep running the panels so you will have it look right and put your next course of siding up

  3. Vinyl siding moves a lot, that is why you should never drive the nails home tightly, but leave a little bit of "play" in them; otherwise it will "wrinkle" in the heat, as it tries to expand, and can't. That is also why you should use as little caulk as you can when installing it.

Below the window, use the same "J"-Channel you used at the head and sides, or install a piece of "Sill Trim" beneath the window. This allows the top of a cut-off length of siding to slide into it, and still be able to slide along its length when it expands & contracts.

Don't just nail it in place.

  4. ive put a lot of siding up but its difficult to understand what you are attempting to convey.

Basically you should always follow your lines. When you came to the window did you put up the J channel around the window perimeter?

Okay then there is another type of channel where you can squeeze the flat edge into it,,I think its called utility channel.

Or maybe I* have them named the other way around.

But anyway ,,with these two channels you should be able to get around the window problem.

  5. just keep going.....it will lock in under on the piece below it and u should cut it to fit in the J-channel around the window about an 1/8 play in height.....be sure u lap it about 2 inches ...
