Vince Cleverly claims Nathan Cleverly would beat Bernard Hopkins – Boxing News
Nathan Cleverly’s father and trainer, Vince Cleverly, has claimed that his son can beat the current World Boxing Council’s and the Ring Magazine’s Light Heavyweight champion, Bernard Hopkins.
The Italian Dragon, Joe Calzaghe, who is the former WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF and Ring Magazine British super middleweight champion and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight champion, stated last week that Bernard Hopkins has “bigger fish to fry” and Vince has responded
to Calzaghe’s comments by making a bold claim.
The 46-year-old Executioner, Hopkins, who beat the Canadian Jean Pascal to become the oldest boxer ever to win a world title, is currently scheduled to defend his title against Chad Dawson in October.
Vince believes if Hopkins wins Dawson then he should fight his son, as he sees no reason why he should not take on his son.
Vince told the media his son is the reigning world champion and deserves a unification bout with the other world champion. He responded to Calzaghe comments by saying his son is the big fish for Hopkins.
While speaking further on the matter, he said “Nathan is a world champion now so what’s wrong with one fighting another to unify the belts? Nathan has every right to fight him and is a big enough fish for Hopkins.”
In the end Vince remarked that no one has unified the belts in the light heavyweight division and therefore Hopkins should sign for a unification bout with his Nathan, as he reckons they both are both equally matched when it comes to the titles.
He went on to day, “It doesn’t matter how old he is or what experience he’s had, it’s what he’s achieved.”
“As the WBO champion he’s the equivalent to Hopkins, he only holds the WBC belt, so no-one in the light-heavyweight division has unified the belts. Hopkins is rated higher, but to be a true world champion you’ve got to unify the belts like Calzaghe did,”
said Vince.
All that left to see is if Hopkins will agree to a unification fight with Nathan Cleverly or not, as it is definitely going to be a very interesting bout.
