Vince Cleverly reveals Nathan Cleverly will not fight Tony Bellew or Enzo Maccarinelli – Boxing news
Vince Cleverly, who is the father and trainer of the current WBA Light Heavyweight world champion Nathan Cleverly, has said that his son will not fight Tony Bellew or Enzo Maccarinelli.
Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew met each other in a pre-fight press conference ahead of their clash for the WBO Light Heavyweight title clash on May 21, 2011 at the O2 Arena in London and the pair nearly came down to blows in a ramped up war of words.
Nathan has Zsolt Erdei, Tavoris Cloud, Beibut Shumenov and Dmitry Sukhotsky as options for his title defence. Therefore, Vince does not want Bellew or Maccarinelli to be his son’s next opponent.
Vince believes Bellew and Maccarinelli do not deserve a fight against his son, as they have not fought any real fighters as of yet. Vince especially mentioned Bellew and said he is simply getting personal.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “There is no need for Nathan to fight Maccarinelli when you’ve got Cloud, Shumenov, Sukhotsky and Erdei. It’s the same with Bellew. How can he justify fighting Nathan? Look at the guys he has fought. He just doesn’t
deserve a shot and he has got personal, that’s what upsets me more. Why should Nathan give him a big payday? Why should he let these guys jump the queue?”
Vince stated his son is the reigning champion and therefore the ball lies in his court. He remarked it is going to be his son who would call out for a fight rather than any one calling him.
“Frank Warren will throw a few names at us, but I can assure you it won’t be Maccarinelli and it won’t be Bellew,” added Vince.
Let’s see whether the Wavertree Bomber, Tony Bellew, who is set to take on Ovill McKenzie on Saturday at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, gets a chance against the unbeaten Welshman Nathan Cleverly or not.
