http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vincent-Kompany-c36184 still hopeful over Manchester City’s Champions League chances
Manchester City defender and Belgian international, Vincent Kompany has gone ahead and placed his faith in the club, as he believes City can still qualify for the knock out stages of the Champions League.
The player went on to make these comments following a two goals to one defeat at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Napoli-c40003 in the competition, which leaves the Italian side sitting in the third spot in their group.
In order for City to progress, they need to beat Bayern Munich and need to hope that Villarreal force a draw against Napoli, or end up beating the Italians.
Despite it seemingly being unlikely for that to happen, many of the City players are now indulging in wishful thinking, as they look to remain in the Champions League for as long as possible.
When talking about the chances of his side progressing, Kompany is quoted to have said: "It is by far the hardest group in the Champions League. It was never going to be easy and always a case of going to the last game”
"I wouldn't say qualifying is a miracle because all Villarreal need is a draw and Villarreal is a difficult away game.
"We've got to focus on our game and try to beat Bayern Munich."
However, the defender is not putting all his eggs in one basket, as he is looking at the prospect of winning the Europa League. Kompany feels that City can easily go on and lift some form of European silverware this season and would settle for the Europa League,
should they drop out of the Champions league.
He added: "But it doesn't matter what happens, we will have a lot to say in the Champions League or Europa League until the end of the competition."
City’s European campaign seems to be a rather weird one. The team has been doing exceptionally well in the Premier League and has so far managed to drop only two points in it. However, they seem to be finding it close to impossible to get up and running
in the Champions League. The team has already lost to Munich and with them facing the Germans once again, it seems quite unlikely for them to pick up all three points. However, should they somehow manage that, Napoli are quite unlikely to lose against Villarreal.
This means City should already be giving their European season a more realistic approach and start focusing on winning the Europa League, instead of hoping for a miracle to happen.
