Vincent Kompany urges caution as Manchester City leaps ahead of Manchester United
Manchester City centre-back Vincent Kompany has urged his team to keep their feet on the ground, after the Citizens jumped to second in the Premier League following their narrow win over
Newcastle on Sunday.
Excitement had been building at Eastlands as City heads into October ahead of arch-rivals Manchester United for the first time in 20 years. But Kompany was quick to relay the focus, reporting
to the Manchester Evening News that, “It’s not about United, it’s about ourselves. As long as we try to remain in the position we are in now, and maybe one spot away from first place, everyone will be happy, regardless of where United are."
The Belgian has stated he is happy with the club’s start to the season, but admitted that the win over Newcastle was not one of the best performances the side will serve up this term.
“The result was the most important thing – it meant we could sit back and watch what happened between Arsenal and Chelsea. We didn’t play at our best, but we did the job and that is what mattered. We can look at the league table and feel we have done a good
job so far,” claimed Kompany.
The Belgian centre-back has been in fantastic form this season, starring against Chelsea just over a week ago, where he handled the threat of Didier Drogba brilliantly. Somewhat overshadowed
by bigger, more illustrious signings, Kompany has really come to the fore this year, becoming a vital part of a solid defence. There’s always the worry that City could quite easily go out and splash inordinate sums of cash on a new, big-name defender, but
if Kompany keeps up the form he’s shown so far this season, it would be a major injustice if a replacement was lined up. For now, he can just enjoy his club’s excellent start to the season.
