correct me if i am wrong please

So we heard yesterday that Vincent Lacavalier will be signing a contract extention with the Tampa Bay Lightning for 9 years worth 77 million and i thought that Tampa Bay couldnt speak with him or his agent until July 1 because he still has 1 year left on his contract So how are they getting away with that

What is the difference in TB being able to speak with him and another team not allowed to speak with someone on their team for example if that were Buffalo and the league knew that they were talking to Miller or Pomminville before July 1 about contract extentions they would be having a holy fit

oh and i realize he hasent resigned yet with TB and they said that they arent going to make it official until July 1 or right after but we still know that Lacavalier has spoken about a contract extention with TB

  1. This is how it works Players are still "Under contract" Till June 30th. July 1st they can be free agents if they are in a contract year. Only the team holding the rights to that player can speak to that person and his agent at anytime to work out an extention. They do not agree to one, he is a free agent

  2. Because he's on the team. The team that holds his rights is allowed to negotiate with a player.

Buffalo really can negotiate if they want to. Sure there are technically rules about negotiating, but if you're on the team and still under contract and it's already the offseason, nobody really cares that much if you go ahead and talk. The one year rule thing is all fine and dandy, but really, nobody gives a ****.

The problem with Buffalo is that they suffer from stupid management. Campbell wanted to take a discount and sign long term. So they trade him because they don't want to pay 5 million for a top tier defenseman that could go for 8 million.... Add to that Drury and Briere and you have the dumbest management in the league.

  3. its a contract EXTENSION. extension means to extend. extend means to make longer.

    BOOM

  4. Contract extensions or a renegotiated contract, while the old one is still good can be done at anytime.

There is no reason why Pomminville or Miller can't renegotiate their contracts. If their contract is up July 1, and they are not signed they become free agents.

Buffalo made this mistake last year with Drury and Briere.

  5. Buffalo is free to talk contract with both Pominville and Miller, nothing can be legally submitted to them for signing until after noon on July 1st

Note: I realize that the Sabres have said can't (I watch the Buffalo news on occasion) but the fact is they can talk, but only talk.

Pittsburgh has had an ongoing casual dialogue with Malkin for almost a month and Boston has been talking to Kessel

    Greg F

A player can only sign an extention in the FINAL year of his contract.  For Pominville and Miller (and Lecavalier) that starts at noon next Tuesday.

    Mr. Taco

Pittsburgh holds Hossa's rights until noon on July 1st, and only Pittsburgh can talk to him (Lemieux and Shero have made it clear he's not letting others talk to Hossa)

    Contract Rules

    1.  Players can talk contract extention with their current club at any time in their tenure

    2.  Players can only sign contract extentions during the final year of their contract

    3.  Come Noon on July 1st, any team can offer a contract to a free agent (restricted or unrestricted).  In the case of restricted free agents, the current team has the right to match.

    For example

    Let's look at Montreal.

At noon on July 1st, Andrei Kostitsyn and Michael Ryder are both free agents.  Any team can talk to them.  They can talk to any team.  Each player is free to field offers and sign the best contract offered to them.  In the case of Ryder, if the best offer comes from another team and he signs it, that will be his new team.  In the case of Kostitsyn, if the best offer comes from another team, and he signs it.............it is classed as an 'offer sheet' for 10 days and Montreal would have the right to match.  If Montreal matches the terms of the offer sheet, he stays a Canadien.  If Montreal chooses not to match........the 'offer sheet' is reclassified as a contract and Kostitsyn has a new team.

Both players can sign contracts with other teams, but an RFA MAY be restricted to re-signing with his current team (even if he doesn't want to be there) because his current team has the right to match until he is 27 (or has 7 years in the league)

  6. It's an extension and the contract kicks in after this coming season.

  7. Because Tampa Bay has rights to him.    The 7/1 deadline only effects teams on the open market.

  8. The July 1 deadline is for UNRESTRICTED free agents. Being that Vinny has a year left on his contract, he still belongs to the Lightning. They could negotiate with him whenever they wanted to. It is all about property rights. Buffalo CAN talk with Miller or Pominville before July 1, because they are no unrestricted free agents. But they COULDN'T talk with, say, Mats Sundin without the permission of Toronto, because Toronto owns his rights. And NO ONE can sign Marian Hossa, though they can talk to him, before July 1, because his rights are owned by no one.
