Vincent Millot surprises Denis Gremelmayr to advance into the quarterfinal – Poznan Porsche Open 2011 CH
French Vincent Millot stunned seventh seeded German Denis Gremelmayr in straight sets to advance into the last eight of the Poznan Porsche Open 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event held on the clay courts in Poznan, Poland. He registered
a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 29-year-old German on Wednesday.
World number 159 Millot displayed brilliant skills to upset the German, ranked 30 places above him in the ATP World Tour Singles Rankings, in just under an hour on their first head-to-head.
The Montpellier native smoothly bagged entire serves through massive forehands from his arsenal of skills. He broke Gremelmayr’s serve in the third and the last game to win the opening set with a 6-3 score line. Millot’s saved
both breakpoints faced and capitalised on half of the four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win comfortably. He also registered an impressive 64 percent win on his lower first serve share and slammed two aces.
Millot lost his ways in the start of the final set as he gifted away his serve to love in the third game. He was trailing 1-3 when he hit back with powerful groundstrokes and eventually snatched the break back in the sixth game
to square the scores at 3-3. Later, the Frenchman kept his remaining serves and broke the seed’s serve again in the tenth game to pocket the set with a 6-4 win. He again produced a lower first serve share but registered a superb 85 percent win on it.
Next challenge for Millot is the third seed Rui Machado. The Portuguese triumphed over Czech Jan Hajek with a breadstick to book this spot. Machado saved four out of five breakpoints faced and converted five out of seven breakpoint
chances to his advantage to clinch the match with a 6-2, 6-1 score line in one hour and twenty-two minutes.
Sixth seed Dustin Brown also crashed out from the tournament. He was leading a set but ran out of steam in the remaining two sets and eventually fell to Czech Dusan Lojda.
With a single break of serve in the end, the German made quick in-roads to progress. He produced an amazing first serve share of 66 percent as compared to Lojda’s 39 percent and faced zero breakpoint. Brown converted one out four
breakpoint opportunity to his advantage to seal the set with a 7-5 win.
26-year-old German broke Lojda’s serve one in the second set as well. However, he saved only four out of six breakpoints conceded and eventually lost the set with a 4-6 defeat.
Brown lost his momentum completely in the final set. He failed to convert both breakpoint chances and saved three out of four breakpoints faced.
