Vincenzo Nibali eyeing the UCI Road World Championships in Limburg, Holland
The UCI Road World Championships 2012 will mark as the final race for most of the cyclists and winner of the race will receive the honour by wearing the leader’s jersey for the whole next season.
The Italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali had a busy year but the cyclist has noted that he will use the World Championships to end his 2012 campaign.
He rode brilliantly throughout the year and filled his pockets with several top performances in different cycling events.
Nibali claimed an overall victory at the Tirreno-Adriatico, finished second at the Tour of Oman and claimed a stage each in both the races.
He rode brilliantly at the Tour de France and was the only real challenge for the British cyclists, Bradley Wiggins and Christopher Froome.
Despite his lightning form, the Team Sky duo managed to claim the first and the second spots at the race and Wiggins became the first British cyclist to receive the honours.
Vincenzo finished more than 6 minutes behind Bradley and occupied the third overall position after the final general classifications.
“For cyclists, the season of rest - if we want to call it that – is winter,” Nibali told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Autumn starts with the Worlds and the Tour of Lombardy, and I certainly wouldn’t mind finishing my season off in style”.
“I’ve always liked to be competitive all year around and I’ve often been so. I’ve had 71 days of racing but I don’t feel tired. Yes, the Shark is still hungry”.
“The team has involved me in the project for the team time trial that opens the Worlds, a nice challenge,” he said.
The UCI Road World Championships will give Nibali an opportunity to prove his dominance on the British cyclists yet again.
Mark Cavendish of Team Sky Procycling is the reigning World Champion and he is looking good to defend his title at the coming race.
The event is scheduled in Limburg, Netherlands through September 15 to 23 for 12 different events.
The 2012 version of the race is expected to bring in a number of changes as a team time trial will be introduced for the first time since 1994.
