Vincenzo Nibali grabbed the second spot at the UCI World Tour Rankings 2012
Vincenzo Nibali is in a terrific shape and his supreme form is evident by seeing the number of victories he has claimed in the season already.
The cyclist currently holds the second overall position at the Elite Men UCI World Tour Rankings with a total number of 272 points in his back pocket.
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is leading the category with a maximum number of 366 points to his credit.
Nibali has extended his lead over Samuel Sanchez of Team Euskaltel-Euskadi who is lying at the third overall position with 252 UCI points.
The Italian registered his first victory of the season at the Tirreno-Adriatico. He claimed the 5th stage, point’s classifications and also grabbed the overall victory at the event.
He also bagged the 5th stage of the Tour of Oman and achieved the 2nd overall spot at the Tour of Oman 2012.
Nibali also achieved the 3rd position at the Milan-San Remo and 2nd at his most recent performance during the Belgian event.
Maxim Iglinsky of Team Astana achieved the first overall spot during the 2012 version of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2012.
Vincenzo fell 21 seconds short and had to settle for the second position at the event. Enrico Gasparotto, Thomas Voeckler and Daniel Martin occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
While commenting on his second place finish at the race he cited, "I did a good attack but because there was a lot of wind coming onto the Saint-Nicolas, it wore me out”.
“I really believed I could do it, but when I saw Iglinskiy coming up to me, I tried to stay on his wheel", he said.
“"I attacked myself on La Roche aux Faucons because I wanted to make a decent move”
“It would have been hard to make a selection on the Saint-Nicolas because everybody was still up there”.
“We would all have been up there waiting. I was just missing a little bit in the end", he concluded.
The 27-year-old achieved the first overall position during the Vuelta a Espana 2010 and finished seventh during the most recent version of the Spanish Grand Tour.
The cyclist also finished third during the Giro d’ Italia 2010 and second during the 2011 edition of the race.
He has already begun practising for the coming Grand Tours of the season and is determined to prove his mettle at the upcoming events.
