Vincenzo Nibali to lead Team Italy at the Olympics and the World Championships 2012
Vincenzo Nibali of Team Liquigas-Cannondale is all set to represent his nation at the 2012 London Olympics.
The cyclist will also lead the Italian side at the coming World Championships in Valkenburg as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 27-year-old is having a terrific season and has already filled his bag with a number of superb performances in the season.
He claimed the first overall position at the Tirreno-Adriatico and also grabbed the point’s classifications at the race.
Nibali claimed the second overall position during the Tour of Oman, third during the Milan-San Remo and finished second during the Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2012.
Italian National Coach is optimistic that Vincenzo’s current form will definitely help his side for the coming events of the season.
He cited, “Vincenzo showed at Lombardy last year and then at San Remo and Liège in 2012 that he knows how to shoulder responsibility and ride with a team behind him”.
“He has a winning mentality and this is fundamental, I’m tired of people who are happy with placings”.
“I’ve advised him to ride the Vuelta like I did, without thinking about the GC”.
“He needs to go to Spain, drop out of the overall picture straight away and then aim for two or three stages,” he concluded.
The 27-year-old started his professional crusade with Team Fassa Bortolo in 2005 and spent period of one year with the side.
He accepted an offer from Team Liquigas-Cannondale in 2006 and has shown faith in the Italian side for the seventh consecutive season.
Nibali has helped his side with several victories and has also represented the team in as many as eight grand tour races since 2007.
He participated in a total number of eight Grand Tour races including four Giro d’Italia, two Tour de France and two Vuelta a Espana.
He finished third during the Giro d’Italia 2010 and occupied the second overall position during the 2011 edition of the Italian race.
Vincenzo’s best performance came during the Grand Tour came during the Vuelta a Espana 2010 as he achieved the first overall spot during the race and overcame some of the strongest athletes in sport.
It will be interesting to see, if Nibali continuous his winning momentum for the 2012 Olympic Games and the World Championships.
