  1. I have been washing clothes for over 50 years and have NEVER heard of putting vinegar in the wash.  Why would you do that? So......no.......do not use vinegar in the wash.  Just detergent.

  2. add  a cup to the wash to set in colors to stop 'bleeding'

add a cup to get out bad smells

spray directly on underarm stains before wash

I mainly use vinegar for odors and to stop bleeding of colors.

  3. Although vinegar may have certain advantages, DO NOT mix it with detergent. Detergent is alkaline. Vinegar is acidic. They will neutralize each other and you will get the benefit of NEITHER. It's like soaking your clothes in salt water. Nothing happens.

Use the detergent first, rinse, then vinegar and rinse. Or, the other way around. Whatever works better for you. Just don't mix the two in the same wash.

Basic chemistry. Acid + Base -> Salt + Water

The reaction between soap and vinegar creates sodium acetate, which is an insert salt, useless for cleaning.

  4. I've never used it for laundry, but I have used it for mopping, washing windows and mirrors, and you can even use it as a hair rinse to restore the pH balance. I certainly don't think it will hurt, and I"m sure the smell will go away during drying.

  5. a sink or bowl with at least 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. For tougher stains use 1 part vinegar to 1 part water.

    Vinegar-Laundry Basics

Vinegar is a veritable powerhouse when it comes to pretreating stains, softening water, and boosting regular laundry detergents. When cleaning fabrics, distilled white vinegar is preferred, but apple cider vinegar works just as well if that's what you have on hand.

This article includes a number of ways you can use vinegar to do a better job with your laundry. We'll start with the basics. (Please note: None of the tips listed here should be tried with dry-clean-only fabrics.)

Blankets: When washing cotton or washable wool blankets, add 2 cups of vinegar to the last rinse cycle. This will help remove the soap and make blankets soft and fluffy.

Clothes softener: Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the last rinse cycle of your wash to soften clothes.

Lint: Reduce lint buildup and keep pet hair from clinging to clothing by adding vinegar to the last rinse cycle.

  6. I do use vinegar in my laundry. It kills germs, deodorizes, degreases, helps keep colors bright, removes stains and soapy residue, and works as a fabric softener. I add 1/2 cup to the final rinse cycle. I don't wash with only vinegar, I use a homemade natural detergent along with it.

Also, I can soak new dark clothes in vinegar and salt to set the dyes and use vinegar and salt on underarm stains.

The vinegar smell dissipates as it dries.
