Question:

Vines/climbers ..for a wall with zero sun??help please?

hiya, i am just trying to sort out my courtyard, we have clematis, and jasmine growing up one wall, but the wall that faces north is very dull, it gets no sun at all, it is a high sandstone wall about 10ft, any ideas what would grow and do ok there? we are out of ideas and are very novice gardeners!!! we where hoping for something that smells lovely.. does jasmine need sun?? aargh help please .. thanks x

  2. Variegated ivy is colourful and looks lovely against sandstone.  You could then grow a viticella clematis up through it - provided it gets ample light - not necessarily sun.

    I have rosa 'new dawn' and chaenomoles 'geisha girl' both growing on a north wall.  New Dawn smells lovely.

  3. Virginia creeper does well and the leaves are a lovely shade of red so it adds a nice touch of colour.

  4. Virginia creeper or boston ivy for the colour, any number of variegated ivies, hydrangea petiolaris - beautiful white flowers in late spring. None of these are scented, I'm afraid, but all are clingers and need no fixed supports.

  5. Jasmine......it adorns the wooden fence on the side of my house that is in total shade and smells lovely.......seamanab x

  6. The clematis "Montana" is the only one that I know will grow on a shady wall. It is quite fast growing and in Spring is a mass of lovely pink flowers when well established.
