Vinnie Calabrese edges past Fraser Patrick in deciding frame – 2011 World Snooker Q School, Event 3
Australian professional Vinnie Calabrese has beaten Fraser Patrick by a frame score of 4-3 in the best-of-seven Round 2 match of the Event 3 of this season’s World Snooker Q School on day four.
The last season of this year’s World Snooker Q School is being held at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
It was an overwhelming performance from the Australian cueist, Calabrese, as he was trailing his opponent 2-3 and also by 61-0 points in the sixth frame before he clawed back and won the frame to force the decider in which he sealed his win. Meanwhile it
was a nightmare for the Englishman, Patrick, as he was on the verge of victory before he lost.
However, it was a very well fought battle which went all the way. The overall score-line between the players was 57-35; 63-66; 82 (62)-11; 1-93 (61); 41-62; 80-61 (61); 84 (84)-7.
Both players were cautious in the opening two frames and shared one frame each. However, in the third frame, Calabrese fired a superb break of 61 to go in front at 2-1. The Englishman, Patrick, also showed his break building skills in the following fourth
and levelled the things at 2-2 with a classy 61.
The fifth frame was a scrappy affair. Both players dug deep into the safety battle but in the end, it was the Patrick who appeared on top to further extend his lead by 3-2.
The sixth frame turned out to be quite a drama. Patrick, who just needed one more frame to reach the finish line, was the first one to be among the balls in it. Moreover, he reached the verge of victory as he compiled a carving break of 61, but somehow lost
his nerves and missed the match ball. Patrick on the other hand showed great temperament and clinched the frame to force the decider.
Patrick did get a chance in the deciding frame as well but he could only roll in seven points and when the chance presented itself, Calabrese killed the match with an excellent break of 84.
