  1. especially considering that he'll still be in that contract when he's 40.

    that's a big risk.

  2. Come the tail end of that contract he gets one Million a year, which could be close to the league minimum by then.

I think it's a good contract. Right now he's worth 10 mil a year, and that's what he's going to get paid. A few years down the line he gets less and less as he gets older and older. And it serves the purpose of decreasing the cap hit.

  3. I think so.  However, I am not a fan of contracts like this.  Sure, as a fan you want to see players like this stay on your team forever, but...  where is the motivation for these players to keep playing their best.  When you have a 2 year contract, you want to keep playing great to earn your next contract.  With an 11 year contract, where is his motivation to keep getting better.  This probably isn't a problem with most players, but you probably can see my point.

  4. His deal is very front loaded. The 1st 6 years he gets 10 million per and it drops every year after that, the 10th year he gets 1.5 mill. and the 11 th year he gets 1 mill.. This makes the deal look better in terms of amounts....nobody freaks out about a 7.4 million per year but they would if they realized it is 10 million per for the first 6 years. This is obviously the first team to skirt the cap rules, they get the average counted against them, not the full 10 million and if he is still a top player the contract get torn up in year 7. So to answer your question.....no he isnt worth that kind of coin at the tail end and they protected themselves very nicely against that scenario. The politics of capology......gotta love it!

  5. I generally agree with most of the answers here, except for one thing: what will salaries look like in 11 years? If they continue to escalate like that are, $7.4 million might not be very much! That's over a decade away! He might need every penny of it just to pay for $100 gas. LOL!!

In any case, I agree: he's worth it right now... but it's doubtful he will be worth it in 11 years.

  6. Absolutely.  When he's pushing forty however he'll be grossly overpaid.  Right now that's the perfect salary for him, but he's not gonna be the player he is now forever.

  7. Right now I'd say yes. If he runs out of incentive after a few years, look out. Somebody's head is going to roll.

  8. He won't be getting that much after the 9th year I believe. It goes down to like 1.25mil and then 1mil. So, no he won't be. Look it up. It was just in our local two tampa papers.

edit. Take that back. It is the first 6 years of his contract, then it keeps going down from there. For what he has done for this team and the community (paying 3 million for a cancer center), yes he is VERY worth it. He is and always will be the face of our team.

  9. The gesture of locking him up for the rest of his career, making him a Bolt' for life. Ensuring the fan base that this team is "in it to win it", makes the deal worth it. It shows a committment by the new ownership to do what it takes to keep their top players around. It shows the team that hard work will be rewarded. And it adds a certain level of confidence and stability, knowing your captain will be there for the next 11 years.

The structure of the contract is brilliant as well.

  10. As was previously mentioned the deal is front loaded meaning he'll get more money up front in bonuses and easy incentives when he only counts for 7.4 million on the cap this year, however they are not the first team to skirt the cap as was mentioned. Briere's contract with the Flyers is setup in a very similar way, nearly identical to be honest, but I digress over anger and some odd sense of pride, to answer the question Vincent is a proven player, leader, and all around face of a franchise, he is worth every penny they will pay him.

  11. no. i say at most he was worth 5 million a year.

  12. hard to say vinny is amazing but he makes 150000 a week!

    Thats alot

  13. Definately worth it.  Good sign for Tampa locking him up like that.  Don Cherry will agree with me.
