I need a lawyer and I don't know what kind I need and what they can do. I recently graduated with an AOS (3.92 GPA). I then went on to apply to transfer to a State University for my Bachelor's. I honestly filled out the application and checked that I have a felony conviction. It is a non-violent crime, the first and only, and in the fourth degree. I noted that I have a NYS Certificate of Relief. I was contacted by an admissions rep. saying it would not be a problem that I would need to write a statement, it would be reviewed by a committee, then I could enroll. I immediately submitted the statement According to H.R.1593, and my Certificate of relief, my GPA there is no reason why I would not be accepted. Classes start in 2 weeks I still don't have a schedule, I am locked out of courses, and it is too late to enroll in another school for the fall. I need to get into the fall semester, and possibly file suit. It is a State University and they accept the Federal Pell Grant. Thank you

  1. I briefly worked as a court stenographer and I actually witnessed a couple cases like this. Before you spend a ton of money on an attorney, contact your Attorney General's Office. Hopefully it won't have to go to court. I never saw a judge take the college's side and that was before President Bush passed the Second Chance act. Lots of luck to you and keep up the good work (3.92 GPA is not easy to get) here is a link for the NY OAG http://www.oag.state.ny.us/

  2. .    The problem was the person who said that your statement would be reviewed by a committee, then you could enroll.  Do you understand what the word "review" means.  They are going to accept or reject you. No one needs a committee if everyone is accepted.  Some get rejected.  She should have warned you that you might be rejected so you could make alternate plans.

You would lose your lawsuit. Even tho they messed you up.

  3. I am sorry but I am not a lawyer or activist but, I did go through something similar. You can check out this link http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?... I hope it can be of some help. It's so messed up: you make a mistake, you do your time, you work hard to move on and you get screwed. Don't give up hope and never stop trying. Good luck!
