Violence to make his sophomore debut either in the Risen or Fountain of Youth Stakes
Black Rock Stables’s 2-year-old – yet to be beaten – colt, Violence, came all the way from New York to have a date with destiny, as under the new qualifying system for the Kentucky Derby, the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity is a major race with 10 qualifying points for the winner, and his make off with the race was a successful one on the closing day of Betfair Hollywood Park’s autumn meet.
Violence’s juvenile season came to a perfect end, with 3 victories in as many starts, now it is time for the 3-year-old campaign, and not let all the hard work go to waste with “The Run for the Roses” 5 months away.
The prep races will be Todd Pletcher’s priority not just for Violence, but also for his immense 2-year-old string this season, and he will want to fill the Kentucky Derby gate as much as anyone this time around. The likes of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, and the to-be Eclipse Award winner for the champion 2-year-old male, Shanghai Bobby, is still the early Kentucky Derby favourite with 5 victories in 5 starts.
Though, the son of Medaglia d'Oro, Violence, after his front-running victory in the Futurity has drawn all the attention and Pletcher will be juggling dates, prep races, and where to run who in the next few months.
Violence will begin his sophomore season by running in either the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes on 23 February, 2013, or the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on the same date.
“He’s the kind of horse that has such a great disposition and good mind that we didn’t think shipping him east to west would bother him at all,” Pletcher said.
The runner-up to Violence in the Futurity was Jerry Hollendorfer trained Fury Kapcori, who ran a good race, but was no match to Violence’s pace. “He didn’t have everything ideal, and he still ran well. And Todd’s horse is awfully good. He’s still undefeated.”
The third place finisher was Den’s Legacy, also the one of the quartet Bob Baffert sent out to win the CashCall Futurity, and has come out of the race fine.
