Question:

Violent Crime in the London?

Hello England - I just read an article in AM New York (I live in NYC) that says violent crime and murder are rapidly increasing in London. Do people in England think this is true? If it is, why do you think violent crime is increasing? It also said that the Mayor of London cautioned citizens not to interfere if they witness a crime taking place (for their own safety).

I always feel safe when I visit London. I would hate it if London turned into NYC in the 1970's.

  1. It certainly is true.  17 youngsters have been stabbed to death in London alone in the last year.

    Its a big deal here.

  2. yeah, loadsd of teenagers have been stabbed recently. knife crime is definately increasing. im not sure why it is...its mostly young people doing it, mainly chavs...im reluctant to blame it on the media or music. i refuse to believe that people are that stupid, but you never know..i think its mostly happening in the poorer areas of london, estates and such. that might be cos people are frustrated with their standard of living, but i really dont know.

i didnt know boris said not to interfere with crime. seems like the kind of thing hed say though.

  3. Statistics can be made to say anything. The thing is that to sell media they have to sensationalize every bad thing at the cost of good. So i actually do not know. some people say it is becuse of violence on TV. others say that youngsters have lost their self image and turn to Black American ( I'll get branded racsist now ) gang culture. Other's say it is happening as there is no deterrant, afterall you might get 5 years but be out in 2 for good behavoir.the Police seem to be able to much becuse their hands are tied ( human rights, govt quotas etc.). Personally I have never had criminal trouble in London , I only seem to get plagued by beggars. All you can be these days wherever you live is be alert.

  4. The violence in New York was overturned by Mayor Guiliani.  He got it completely right and succeeded in what was apparently the impossible.

British Law favours the criminal and punishes the victims.  Simple as that.  Anyone who defends themselves or their home will be arrested and have a criminal record.  If this sounds crazy it is.

Carrying a knife does not merit a prison sentence, hit and run drivers who kill walk free with a fine and points on their driving licence.  Terrorists are protected by the Human Rights Act, as are criminals.  Not the law abiding public though.

Perhaps it's time for all Americans ,who think Tony Blair is so great, to have a rethink about what he instiigated in this country and why you seem to applaud him so much.

  5. Its because of this teen on teen murders:

Its not that bad compared to New York City now and before I guess but because London is not use to crime like this especially due to the victims ages and a sudden outbreak of it only starting in 2007 its seen as rapidly increasing. London has 7 million people this is not at outbreak in London but in certain areas yes it is like the boroughs of Lambeth, Hackney, Newham and Enfeild which you and other tourist wont have any intrest in going to there inner city areas no tourist attractions high density communities its like a Londoner visiting projects in America.

This is the only murder which has been recorded on Oxford Street central London the main shopping street in the country where there are many tourists as you can see it happened in broad day light and in front of hundreds a man was killed over spilling a drink got his throat slashed but I beleive there was more to it and he knew his killers and all are British born so no you will be safe most the killings are targets or related not some random thing of violence.

  6. Hi, yes unfortunately its all true and yes the Mayor of London advised people not to intervene but to call the police if they see a crime being committed.

I think that there are a lot of factors including inappropriate prison sentences, there are no deterrents for young people in this country, schools have no clout anymore and if children aren't getting discipline at home either, then how can they learn any discipline? I also think that TV has a lot to answer for, sorry but thats what I think!

  7. well kinda, people are gettin stabbed, as they were before, put anything that the media wants you to believe they can, cus people are dumb, london is the same as it always been, if anything it abit more violent cus these polish/ europeans are commin over with out a passport and killin people then gettin away with it. bloody L this country is so thick, im move dubia

  8. Well, it's happening.  NYC, '70, here I come.  (Boards plane for london)

  9. I am afraid it is true i live in cumbria way north of London and its awful the rise in violent crime all over the u.k

the young people loosing their lives in stabbings alone are far too many.

personally i feel some responsibility has to lay with the parents although i wouldn't blame parents i do think some could do more to steer their kids in the right direction. but sometimes it just comes down to the fact that there are just some really nasty people out there looking for trouble.

i hope you don't get put off visiting in the future the u.k still has more nice people than bad.
