Violette focuses on the Futurity Stakes with Carried Interest
Trained by Richard Violette for owners Seth Klarman and Bill Lawrence, the 2-year-old, Spurious Precision, spoiled his owners’ and trainer’s good summer after incurring fatal injury while training for the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park next month.
The High Cotton colt was euthanized after fracturing his knee, and it was a great loss for the connections, especially when the colt made such a bright start to his racing career by breaking his maiden at first asking at Saratoga going over at 5 ½ furlongs.
The deceased colt didn’t stop there, as he stepped up to 6 ½ furlongs and was impressive in landing the Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes in August.
Richard Violette is now left with another promising juvenile, Carried Interest, who has been equally impressive in his only start by defeating Todd Pletcher trained next-out winner, Palace Malice.
“It was spectacular,” Violette said. “I think Todd thought very highly of Palace Malice − certainly one of his better 2-year-olds − and he confirmed that breaking his maiden at Saratoga.”
Carried Interest burst on to the scene - a little before Spurious Precision made his debut – with an impressive victory in which he covered the 5 furlong distance in 56.62 seconds, and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 90 on 5 July, 2012.
The son of Henny Hughes is also owned by Lawrence Klaravich. The colt had a slight shin problem, which prompted Violette to bypass the Saratoga Special, and now that the colt is back working after an 88-day layoff, Carried Interest is pointed toward the
Grade 2, $200,000 Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park that has reeled in a field of six juveniles.
“I think I got him as tight as I can. The post position kind of [stinks],” said Violette, whose horse will break from the rail under Alan Garcia. “I think he’s a nice horse. He’ll run great. If he’s fit enough, he’s fit enough. He had a terrific breeze the
other day.”
An interesting horse in the Futurity Stakes is the Dale Romans trained, Gulfport, who had a tough maiden first time out, but got scratched from another for the Futurity Stakes.
