  1. Helping you find a good violin store would be a lot easier if we knew where you live so that we could recommend one in or near your city. You do NOT want to buy online. You have to see, try out, hear and compare a bunch of violins in person before you find one you love and want to play.

And free lessons on line are mostly worth exactly what you pay for them, IMO.

There are lots of instructional DVDs for folk fiddle, but none that I know of for classical violin.  If you want to play bluegrass, or Irish, or old-time, or Cajun or jazz, you can find tons of instructional material in the form of books, DVD's, and audio CD's at www.elderly.com.   If you want to play classical, you're pretty much going to have to go with books and one-on-one lessons with a live teacher, I think.

  2. Most music stores will rent you a violin.  If you don't already have one or know how to play one, buying one at this point is a bad idea - you can't tell a Strad from a lemon.  Someone is going to rip you off.  Rent a violin for a few months, and take a few lessons.  It's a lot cheaper to rent and take a few lessons than buy a violin.  You need to know what you're looking for, and taking lessons online isn't a good idea even if there were a good site for that.  The computer can't tell you that your intonation is wrong, that you're holding the bow incorrectly, or see bad habits you're picking up.

  3. i would say go to a music store and rent a violin, if you're a beginner, then ask for violin lessons, taking online lessons is a load of c**p, the only way you can really learn the art of the violin is by person

    best of luck!
