  1. it depends, violin is easy to play horribly and harder to play well but if you're up for a challenge go for it. guitar is easier to pick up. I would say that it also depends on what kind of music you want to play, but i love to play rock on my violin!

  2. guitar way more modern

    answer mine plz!!!!

  3. My late music teacher once told me "if you have a great ear for music you have an ear to play the violin" that convinced me to play the violin, unfortunately for me i'm no good at a guitar. Violin has a sound of all on it's own and a guitar does too, it comes down to you!  Have you gotr a good listening ear, as this is what the violin needs, esp when it's time for tuning.

  4. Play both!!

I've played guitar semi-pro for 25 years and I love it!! However, I would love to play the violin and often find myself fondling them in music stores. If you love the sound of one you will love the other.

  5. The violin is the hardest instrument to master, and you will sound like a chicken being strangled in the beginning for many months. You should probably get a teacher.

The guitar is slightly easier, and you will be able to learn it faster. You don't have to get a teacher. You won't have to worry too much about being out of tune, and you will sound fairly good after a couple of weeks, but you will have to learn music theory to really understand the chords. A lot of people "play" the guitar though.

You can also consider other string instruments. Violin and guitar are not the only two to choose from.

  6. Violin is a very hard instrument to master, but if you learn violin first, it will make picking up guitar later, a breeze.

  7. Violin.

    Guitar is so unoriginal.

  8. It all depends on the type of guitar or violin. Electric guitar is becoming increasingly popular and can be distorted with different amplifiers. Acoustic guitars are very nice too and probably easier than violin. I've never tried violin, but they can have a sweeter or sadder tone.

If i had to choose, I would recommend violin because it is a rarer and more valuable equality to be good at violin than guitar. But if you master one and still want to learn the other, play both!

  9. Here's the question:

Do you want to eventually play in a rock band? I think we all do. I play electric guitar and bass (which is another option). I really enjoy writing music with my local band (www.myspace.com/markitzeroband). There are a few bands like Dave Matthews Band and Yellowcard that do have violinists or if you want to play classical music professionally or for a school orchestra,  then by all means go with the violin.

The great thing about guitar is that you can get a cheap accoustic guitar and play it anywhere. I really enjoy my black Fender accoustic and it was about $200. They have very low maintenance and you can choose to play fingerstyle or with a pick (which costs around 35 cents instead of the price of a bow). Here's the other thing. Think of all your favorite songs. Are they guitar or violin based? That may be an easy way to decide. If you have friends that are starting a band, ask if they need a guitarist or bass player. Either way you can learn to read music which is helpful on any instrument. Even if you don't want to play in a band/orchestra, a guitar is a lot more fun to bring on camping trips. Once you learn a few simple chords, you'll be impressing your friends by playing "Every rose has it's thorn" in no time! There are a ton of great resources for learning guitar too. Once you learn how to read 'tablature' (a guitar shorthand that's easier to read than standard music notation) you'll be able to do internet searches for your favorite songs!

    guitar.about.com (free lessons)

    ultimate-guitar.com (free tablature)

    workshoplive.com (pay lessons)

    Good Luck!

  10. Depends what you want to play - if you like classical and want to play in an orchestra, chamber groups etc then its got to be the violin. If you want to be a rockstar then gotta be the guitar!

Classical guitar is lovely - but you don't get many playing opportunities!
