Alright, I'm a viola player, and I am going to play violin as my second instrument, I just want to know if anyone knows any good sites to buy instruments, like south west strings, that has instruments in the 100 to 200 range the music stores in my area really suck and have c**p quality, I obviously know i won't get any better quality with the price i'm asking but I'm obviously not going to go out and buy a freaking 500 dollar violin.

  1. i guess it depends on how serious you are about playing the violin. for fun, anything goes. for school/extracurricular u probably should up your price range a bit.

normally i wouldn't suggest buying online, but anything under $2000 is probably factory-made so I would suggest Music&Arts Center. If there's a Potter's Violin shop branch nearby i would suggest it.

and for the record, most violins are in the $2000-$4000 price range. the only halfway decent sounding violins are at least 50 years old.

  2. You can get a decent sounding student violin for $200.  Southwest Strings has good instruments.  I wouldnt be worried about it.  If you decide to start studying violin seriously, you can get a professional quality violin for about $1500-$2000.  You just need to know where to get them.
