Violin without a shoulder rest?

Question

I've always played my violin without my shoulder rest but every time my teacher notices he get a little angry, or if we have a guest teacher they seem shocked.

Should I start playing with one? If so, why?

well, i've been playing the violin for 8 years..and my teacher is really strict on me having the shoulder rest.....

this is because:

YOU WILL NOT EXERT EFFORT ON HOLDING YOUR VIOLIN WITH YOUR CHIN AND YOUR SHOULDER...that's the main advantage..so i advice you to use your shoulder rest...

i have that experience of yours too, i wasn't comfortable at the very beginning but I became used to it..after some days...

HAVE THE VIOLIN REST!!!!

You dont have to,I do,its just more comfortable.

it depends on the length of your neck. if you have a long neck, i encourage you to get a shoulder rest so your performances and practices will be better. otherwise,theres actually limited use of a shoulder rest.
