Virgil Hunter strikes back at Eddie Hearn – Boxing News
It seems like the war between Briton former light welterweight titlist Amir Khan and Briton welterweight fighter Kell Brook is indeed personal. While Eddie Hearn claimed yesterday that Khan is no position to dictate the terms of a showdown to Brook, Khan’s
newly appointed trainer Virgil Hunter asserts Brook is still on the stairway to heaven while Khan has already been there.
According to Hunter, Brook is still shaping up to be a pay-per-view sensation while Khan has been there and done that. Hunter believes even though Khan has lost his last two fights, the Bolton proud still stands as a fight sensation.
However, Hunter does admit the fact that Khan is not yet ready to move up to the welterweight division to face Brook.
“First of all Amir is not a mature welterweight so I don’t blame Kell, Eddie, and his team for wanting to fed-ex the fight,” said Hunter in an interview with World Boxing News.
“From the business side 50/50 won’t happen. Listen, Kell is a good fighter and he has to be considered as a future champion, but the reality of this matter is Kell is still playing catch-up in his accomplishments,” Hunter asserted while talking about the
50/50 split Hearn reflected at.
When asked about Khan’s aspirations, Hunter asserted, “Amir is focusing on Carlos Molina and he will take his fights one at a time. It would be great to see Kell beat a couple of real contenders or champions and build up to a fight in the future with Amir.
“Eventually when Amir is a true welterweight, he and Kell will fight. But let me say this, Amir's best performances will come at welterweight.”
It should be noted here that Khan already promised Brook a showdown if the latter is able to grab a world title. Khan spoke with Brook face to face a month back, saying he is ready to take on the fellow Briton fighter if it is a world title fight.
Brook won his recent fight via knockout and is now on his way to a world title fight. If he wins, Khan will have nowhere to go but to fight him.
