Virgin Racing Team’s Timo Glock to miss the final pre-season test session in Barcelona – Formula 1 news
Virgin Racing Team’s Timo Glock recently went through an appendectomy in a Swiss hospital and is expected to miss the final pre-season test session of the 2011 Formula 1 season that is expected to take place in Barcelona from March 8.
“It's a shame that I'll probably miss the tests in Barcelona,” he said, although he was sure he will be fit for the season opener in Melbourne later this month.
According to some reports, Glock had his appendix removed after sudden illness. He went through a routine surgery and it is believed that he will recover before the season opening race that is expected to take place in Australia on March 27, 2011.
The 2011 Formula 1 season had to be delayed since the season opening race that was expected to take place in Bahrain on March 13 was postponed due to current political unrest in the country.
“Without an appendix I'm certain to be faster ... I mean, it must have weighed a few grams at least,” he joked.
Virgin Racing Team’s boss John Booth stated that Timo will have to stay in the hospital for another 24 hours after the operation and confirmed there is nothing to worry about as it was just a routine operation and the Italian is recovering fine.
“I can confirm that Timo had an operation yesterday to remove his appendix after a sudden case of appendicitis. The procedure was routine and Timo is recovering well in a Swiss hospital where he is likely to remain for a further 24 hours,” said John.
He added that in order to ensure that he recovers fully, he is not going to take part at the final pre-season test session in Barcelona and the team’s second driver Jerome d’ Ambrosio will run on all four days instead.
The team will make a final decision next week though and if Timo recovers before the final pre-season test session, the team would be glad to have him back for the session.
However, Virgin Racing Team are expecting a better performance this year as compared to their 2010 run as the team was unable to score a single point in its debut season.
The three new teams introduced to Formula 1 by the FIA included Lotus Racing Team, Hispania Racing Team and Virgin Racing Team.
It would be interesting to see how the three new teams perform in the 2011 Formula 1 season comparatively and one will get an idea of what they are capable of after the season opening race in Australia on March 27.
