Virgin media says I should have a D/L speed of 200kbps with a 2Mb connection?

so i rang virgin media up cos my connection was really slow (as normal) and a guy began a long conversation with me. he said i had a 2megaBIT connection and should be getting downloading speed tests of around 200kbps, is that even right? i have done many speed tests before and i always get a download speed of 1700 - 1900kbps. so we aruged for a while and he kept telling me that he knew what he was talking about. i did another download speed for him and I got 670kbps, he found this very surprising and told me to keep quiet about the business because he suggested virgin media has given me more than a 2Mb connection? does this seem right?

2 Mbits per second should be giving you nearly 2000 Kbits per second. So yes, you were right, he was wrong.

....wow that guy really needs to go back to tech support training and learn that your never supposed to act like a prick to customers. You actually are right and this guy is confused and doesn't fully know anything. A 2Mbps speed is going to give you around 1700-1900kbps as its supposed to. Upload speed will be a lot slower but download speed is gonna be about what they said. I suggest if you have this guys badge number to report him. You knew what you were talking about. the 670 is a little strange but it could have just been a connection error or something. It is megabits though and not megabites(which would be awesome).

That's right. When talking connection in megabits you always assume to divide by 10 for the actual maximum download speed.

i.e.

56k = d/l speeds of around 5kbps

1Mb (1000k) = 100kbps

2Mb (2000k) = 200kbps

and so on.
