VirginMedia - any good or bad experiences?

I am thinking of moving my broadband and home phone to VirginMedia as I could save money on line rental that way. However, I am reluctant to do so without knowing if they are reliable.

  1. I've always found that the service they offer is reliable.

I currently pay £18 for 2Mb broadband speed, which I have never had any problems with - it always gives the stated speed and I have yet to go over the monthly usage (if any). It's worth noting that their broadband is through cable.

Phone-line rental is £11, with another £5 on other assorted bits such as free evening and weekend calls.

About a year ago, there was an offer on for a month free TV (was from the then NTL at the time). I didn't end up paying for anything, but got a free TV box, which also gives free TV shows for the weeks catch-up and other TV shows they offer free via their on demand service. The TV also comes through cable.

So yeah TV and broadband is cable so it's very reliable. The UK is lacking in terms of more cable customers, as cable is "future proof" and you'd go to other countries and find more people with it.

Anyway, hope my answer helped :)

  2. I am with Virgin Media just now. I signed up for the 3 for £30 offer last year (phone, broadband, tv). So far i haven't had any problems. Broadband and phone are both perfect, no complaints at all.

The TV on the other hand, the picture quality is not as good as you get with Sky. The TV remote looks and feels like it is made with old yogurt pots and now and again the signal crashes and the screen freezes. Also, when you have sky you can skip forward the TV guide a number of weeks so you can see whats coming up in say a month. With Virgin, its not possible to tell what programmes are on the next day, we have to go on-linee to find out.

Apart from the TV issue, it is reasonable for the amount being paid. However, our contract is up in November and we are switching back to Sky!!!!!

  3. NO!!! For the love of god don't do it! I made that mistake last year, and here's a few things that have happened:

They gave me the impression it was wireless and I'd get a router, I didn't.

They didn't (and still haven't) supplied me with a copy of the contract despite being required to do so by law.

They frequently attempted to charge me line rental twice a month.

They told me I could cancel, set up the cancellation then didn't cancel it and told me they wouldn't unless I paid for the rest of the supposed contract I was in (but as I said never saw).

It took them 6 weeks to reply to a complaint, when I asked them to ring me back with regards to their response I gave them my mobile no. (the land line was broken) and they rang back on the alternative number, which was my housemate who was at work. I'D JUST RECITED MY NUMBER TO THEM!!!

When I arranged to get the land line fixed they asked me if I'd prefer the technician to come Thursday or Saturday, I said Thursday, no one turned up, found out they'd booked it for Saturday.

EVERY single person I have spoken to has either been incompetent, patronising, contradictory to previous staff or a combination of the three. In short they are a bunch of lying, immoral, deceitful, law breaking, moronic twats and I hate them, they are as bad if not worse than British Gas. Come September 26th my contract runs out, I will soon be sending my cancellation (by recorded delivery of course) and if they fail to cancel it I'm taking them to court. Even though it will cost us £130 for a BT line and then a lot more a month for whatever other internet service it is a preferable course of action.

  4. I've been on Virgin Media since it was Telewest and so far it's worked very well.

Only problem with the telly, and I don't know if everyone's got this problem, it's delayed by about 2 seconds. Which is a lot, especially when watching football - you find out about the goal agess after everyone else.

Other than that, no problems yet with the phone line or the broadband.

  5. I've had their phone package for over 5 yrs and never had a problem, I've had broadband for about 6 months and again not a problem.Although if you do have to phone them up be prepared to speak to someone in India and not all of them can speak good English.
