Virginia Espejo storms into top spot in second round of LET Q School 2013
Virginia Espejo of Spain made a surprise charge in the second round of Lalla Aicha Tour School 2013, carding a 66 to grab a solo lead.
Espejo started her campaign in style at the prestigious Al Maaden Course in Marrakech, Morocco, on Thursday as she posted a 68 in the first round to take the third position.
However, Swedish Isabella Ramsay was quick to capitalise on the favourable weather conditions, seizing an early lead after she shot a 65 on the first day.
Espejo ramped up pressure on rivals in the second round, making perfect strokes on the greens of almost all the holes. The Spanish star started the round with an aim to rise to the top of the leaderboard, as she knew that the only factor that would help her boost position was avoiding a poor short game on the greens.
Espejo shot 8 birdies, but faltered on two holes carding bogeys.
The LET (Ladies European Tour) titan started the round on the front nine. She parred the first three holes and launched two straight birdies on the 4th and 5th hole. She once again impressed the spectators, draining a birdie on the par-5 7th.
The 8th hole proved a little challenging, which caused Espejo to card a bogey. However, she quickly offset the bogey impact after posting a birdie on the next hole.
On the back nine, her performance remained almost the same as she rattled off a birdie on the 10th. She then shot another two birdies and carded a bogey on the par-5 13th.
Speaking to the media about her surprise charge into the top spot, Espejo said that she was sure that she would be able to improve her position in the second round. She said the field is tough but she overcame every challenge with her caddie’s assistance.
“A million thanks to my caddie, because without him, I would not have been able to keep my score,” said the young gun who studied mathematician at the University of Mississippi last year.
Espejo went on to say that she felt a bit under pressure at one stage during the round, but most of the time her nerves were in control.
