Virginia Guntur stuns Celine Shao to grab Girl’s Singles crown at 2012 Pop N Good Popcorn U15 Open
New Zealand’s upcoming player Virginia Guntur surprised everyone as she grabbed Girl’s Singles title after giving a shocking treatment to her higher ranked team-mate Celine Shao in the final battle at the 2012 Pop N Good Popcorn U15 Open at Hamilton, New
Zealand, on Sunday, June 17.
The in-form Virginia, who was un-seeded in the draw of the event, displayed a spectacular show of attacking badminton and thrashed Celine who was top seeded player in Girl’s Singles draw of the championship.
The lower ranked Virginia was in a completely different mood while playing against the top seeded Celine and easily wrapped up victory in straight games with a stunning margin on the score board.
Celine, in the meanwhile, failed to continue her winning run in the tournament as she received a severe treatment from her lower ranked opponent and lost to her without showing even a meagre resistance in the entire straight-set contest.
Right from the initial stage, Virginia showed her aggression and did not waste any time in setting up a wonderful lead on the score board.
On the other hand, Celine tried to play aggressive badminton but failed to take the bird early and missed the targeted areas.
Until the interval in the opening set of this Girl’s Singles title clash, it was the lower ranked Virginia who took a staggering lead on the board.
After the break, Virginia continued her sensational run in the court as she did not face any trouble form her higher ranked opponent and bagged the set with a huge margin of 21-11.
In the second game, Celine played slightly better badminton as she did not make un-forced errors at the initial stage and remained close to her team-mate for the first few points.
However, Virginia geared up her speed and managed a reasonable gap on the board until the one-minute interval.
After the break, the un-seeded Virginia did not lose her focus and also showed no mercy to her challenger. She progressed with an impressive speed and took the set with a wonderful margin of 21-14.
Virginia emerged as the winner in the title match against her higher ranked team-mate Celine with a comprehensive 21-11 and 21-14 score on the board.
