Virginia Tech last minute heroics sink Georgia Tech
In one of the most exciting games of the year so far the no. 22 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies got a victory over the unranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 28-21 on Thursday 4 November. The victory brings the Hokies record to 7-2 while the Yellow Jackets
fall to 5-4.
Game highlights
The first quarter had the Yellow Jackets taking it to the Hokies, as quarterback Joshua Nesbitt ran for two touchdowns. The first one was only a one yard run, while the second was a whopping
71-yard run, splitting the Virginia Tech defensive line. With that run, Nesbitt has become the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) all-time leading rusher from the quarterback position. The Yellow Jackets took a 14-0 lead going into the second quarter.
Four seconds into the second quarter and Virginia Tech got on the board. Running back Ryan Williams scored from four yards out, to cut the Yellow Jacket lead in half. After that, it was a defensive battle
up until the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Hokies tied the game at 14-14 with a solid 15 yard run by David Wilson at 13:21. Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for his first touchdown of the game at with just over six
and a half minutes left, bringing the score to 21-14 for the Hokies. On Georgia Tech’s next possession, the stormed down to the Hokies nine yard line, where Yellow Jacket running back Orwin Smith tied the game at 21-21 with a strong nine yard run.
With the score tied, the game looks ripe for overtime, however, Georgia Tech was not expecting the blazing speed of David Wilson, who fielded the kick and ran it back 90 yards to the house for a Virginia
Tech 28-21 lead with only 2:23 left to play.
The Yellow Jackets last possession included several excellent and gutsy plays. One was on a third down with 17 yards to go, and backup quarterback Tevin Washington, who was replacing the injured Joshua Nesbitt,
ran it 17 and half yards for a first down, keeping hopes alive. However, with 14 seconds to go, Washington threw up a prayer from the Hokie 20 yard line, but it was intercepted by Virginia Tech, which ended all Yellow Jacket hopes.
Thoughts on the game
Virginia Tech played a sloppy game, and it showed with their lone interception coming in the Yellow Jacket red zone and a few long drives that they allowed on defense.
"It wasn't a beautiful game," Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech head coach said according to the Associated Press, "but the score sure was pretty."
As for the hero of the game, David Wilson, he was just excited to be able to field the kick.
"I was excited because they had been avoiding me all game (on kickoffs)," Wilson said. "When I saw green, I just cut the jets on."
Who’s next?
Georgia Tech, who is on a two game losing streak, will be in tough next weekend against the Miami Hurricanes, while Virginia Tech will looking to keep their seven-game winning streak alive
against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
