Virginia Universities - How hard are they to get in for out-of- state students?

I live in Texas and I was thinking about applying to George Mason University or Virginia Tech. I have a 3.82 GPA and a 2050 on the SAT. I've heard of people getting into George Mason on a lot less, but I was wondering if the fact that I'm an out of state applicant makes things considerably more difficult. Anyone know anything?

  1. I'm from California.  I went to The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg and had a slightly higher GPA and similar SAT scores.  No problem for me.  If I were you, I'd reconsider and apply to the University of Virginia or William and Mary.  UVA is the most likely to accept an out-of-state student since their overall enrollment is massive.  Another good one that is quite affordable and readily admits out of state students is Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA (formerly a satellite campus of William and Mary).  It really depends on how much you're willing to spend on tuition.  For what you're going to pay at Virginia Tech you may as well go to William & Mary or UVA, the most prestigious universities in the commonwealth (W&M is the second oldest college in the U.S. after Harvard).  George Mason is a good choice and you'll likely be accepted but as far as reputation goes, it's on par with Tech, but less prestigious than UVA and W&M.  You need to consider your major.  If you're not going into agriculture or engineering, VA Tech isn't necessarily the best choice, although it is a fantastic school.  UVA, W&M, and Tech all accept out-of-state students with your qualifications.  Hope that helps!

  2. Try out of country students, they look upon as cash cow.

  3. It depends on the quality of the school.  Virginia is harder for out of state students to get into than WIlliam & Mary, which is harder than Virginia Tech which is harder than George Mason.

You have a good shot at both.  The thing is -- with your grades, you can do better than Virginia Tech and a LOT better than George Mason.  If your GPA is unweighted, you ought to be looking at much better public universities, or private universities just below the elite schools.

Princeton Review has a tool where you can enter information about your interests and background.  It will suggest schools for you.  The link is below.
