I've been dancing for almost 12 years now. I'm pretty flexible, but i have very little muscle. My technique is okay, but i sometimes find it extremely difficult to do simple things like double pirouettes. I can remember choreography really well but it takes me a while to process it. Also, I'm not too great at deciphering the French language in ballet class. I know if i went to Virginia School of the Arts I would improve greatly, but I'd like to know my chances of getting into the school in the first place. Are they looking for people who are already great, or do they accept people who have potential? Any insight into the school would be great.

  1. Ive taken a look at the website. Looks like a great atmosphere. They definately accept people to nurture and help them grow as dancers. Follow the auditions instructions and go for it! They have ways to help you unlock your hidden potential. Besides, what are chances really? Its a school, they want to help you. Dont worry to much and try your best. Dont think of a rejection as a bad thing. It just gives you something to think about. If humans quit on the first failure we would never get anywhere. Do you think Einstein got it right the first time everytime? Or any other human illuminary? Remeber you havent pushed yourself hard enough if you havent failed. The best dancers are the ones that fall. They go beyond what the body already knows.

    Good Luck and Enjoy!

  2. My daughter's experience with auditioning for VSA's summer program (and checking that she'd be interested in the year-round program just for the heck of it) is that it's not too hard to get accepted. One of her studio-mates transferred to VSA for 11th grade and got a lot out of it. It's a rigorous program that is not for everyone. There is definitely a pecking order with those who are favored and those who aren't. The neighboring high school is also very rigorous. The program costs quite a lot, but if you can afford it, you're bound to improve as a dancer. However, if you live in a city with a professional ballet company, you can do just as well by attending their school.

Edit to add: Still waiting for my "lots of points." ;-)
