Virginie Razzano and Kimiko Date-Krumm qualify for the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open
27-year-old Frenchwoman, Virginie Razzano outclassed her fellow compatriot, Alize Cornet, in the first round of the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami, Florida on Wednesday night. She sealed her straight sets victory at 6-3, 6-1, taking
just one hour and twenty one minutes of play to reach the second round of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event.
Razzano avenged her last years defeat from Cornet at Saint Malo, extending her head-to-head lead to 4-2 after her win at Miami. The in-form French had least difficulty to overcome her opponent to register her ninth victory of the
running WTA season.
Although Razzano served with a mere 51 per cent accuracy in the game, she collected 63 out of 104 total points in the match. She fully capitalized upon the error-ridden game of Cornet, who spilled out six expensive double faults
in the game. The French winner crafted 10 break opportunities in the game and converted five of them to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Four double faults from Cornet in the opener gave the start desired by her rival. The two contestants exchanged a serve break early in the first set to take the scores to 4-3, with Razzano leading. A second break point allowed
Razzano to seal the opening set at 6-3, giving her 1-0 advantage in the match.
Razzano was phenomenal in the following set as she broke her compatriot’s serve three times to race away to conclude victory at 6-1. She bagged 29 of the total 44 points and wasn’t broken even once in the second set. Razzano will
square off against the 14th seed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in the next round of the Sony Ericsson Open this week. Kanepi received a bye to the second round of the tournament.
In another match being played on Wednesday night, world number 54 Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan stood victorious against the unseeded Czech opponent, Zuzana Ondraskova in the opening round. It took 82 minutes for the Japanese to edge
past her opponent in straight sets at 6-4, 6-3, to make it to the second round of the tournament.
The two players received 11 break opportunities each, with Date-Krumm converting seven and Ondraskova cashing in five chances in the game. The Japanese conceded five double faults in the opening set but cracked four serve breaks
to compensate for them. The three break points from the Czech couldn’t prevent her losing the first set to her opponent at 6-4.
Things looked relatively easier for Date-Krumm in the second set and stung three serve breaks while serving amazingly with 79 per cent accuracy. A Japanese forehand closed the contest at 6-2, marking an end to Ondraskova’s voyage
in the Sony Ericsson Open. Date-Krumm will take on the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the second round at Miami. Ivanovic got to the second round of the tournament through a bye.
