Virginie Razzano defeats Marina Erakovic in the 2nd round – Mercury Open 2011
French Virginie Razzano destroyed the Kiwi Marina Erakovic during the second round of 2011 Mercury Open at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, California as he managed to stick out the seventy three minute match unbroken. The
number world number 73; Razzano, had a comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 win over Erakovic, winning both the sets.
The 28-year-old French committed zero double faults and smashed an ace, however, the Kiwi’s precision faltered and she threw a net ball.
Although, Razzano failed to save the only break point on her serve, she was able to capitalize on 3 of the 4 break points that she faced. While, Erakovic saved one of out the four break point chances and broke her opponent once.
The first set saw Razzano win seventeen of thirty one service points making it a fifty five percent win against Erakovic who only managed to win a mere thirty five percent of her total service points. Total return points were also
won by Razzano, which were a commendable sixty five percent thus giving her a total fifty nine percent win to outsmart Erakovic, hence, giving her a 1-0 lead.
During the second set of the match the French served two aces, struck two double faults, won seventeen out of twenty two service points making it a grand seventy seven percent win against the Kiwi.
The 28-year-old had a strong defence and did not allow her opponent a single chance to break her and instead broke her Kiwi opponent two times. While, the 23-year-old (Erakovic) failed to avail any break points, she was capable
of saving four out of the six break points.
Razzano bagged forty four percent of total return points and achieved fifty seven percent of total points giving the French a 2-0 victory to the third round of the Mercury Insurance Open 2011.
Razzano, the French, ranks at 73 in the world while her opponent Erakovic holds the 100th position as of August 2011. Razzano has reached a career high ranking of 16 on the 14th of September, 2009.
2011 WTA World tour has seen many ups and downs for the French (Razzano) she has managed to win sixteen matches and has contested in three grand slams, her most recent being at Wimbledon where she lost in the second round to Caroline
Wozniacki 6-1, 6-3 record. Then at the Roland Garros she lost in the first round to Jarmila Gajdosova. She again managed to qualify the first round of the Australian Cup but fell victim to WTA ranking, number 5, Maria Sharapova. 2009, was the height of her
career when the 28-year-old broke into the top 20’s for the first time. With a yearend high at 19,
Razzano will face the German, Andrea Petkovic for a spot in the quarter-final of the Mercury Open 2011.
