Virginie Razzano dismantles Roberta Vinci in 2nd round – China Open 2011
French qualifier Virginie Razzano dismantled fifteenth seeded Roberta Vinci in the second round of the China Open 2011. After battling for one hour and twenty seven minutes on outdoor hard courts of the National Tennis Center, the fifteenth seeded Italian
was flabbergasted when the French qualifier won in straight sets of 7-6(7), 6-0 on the 4th of October 2011.
Serving for the opening set was world number 110 Razzano, who was a much lower ranked opponent in comparison to the world number 20 Vinci. Both the players were successful in winning on their own serves for the first four games and the scoreboard rolled
to 2-2. In the fifth game Razzano held serve and took a mini lead of 3-2. Moreover, she was first to break and as she capitalized on the break, she further increased the gap to 4-2.
However, immediately in the next game, Vinci returned the favour and broke back and as she held serve in the eighth game, she tied the score at 4-4. During the following two games the score progressed on even terms and the score was rounded at 5-5. In due
course, the players pushed the set into a tiebreaker at 6-6.
The head-to-head run between the players continued well into the tiebreaker, matching a blow for a blow the scoreboard tied at 3-3, then 4-4, and 5-5. Both the players displayed excellent skills by smashing drop shots, winners and crosscourt shots. With
a series of breaks and holds, they again tied the score at 6-6 and then 7-7. However, as Razzano took on a dominating style of play, she reeled of straight two points to wrap up the tiebreaker at 9-7.
Opening the second round of the match was again Vinci and this time she got off to a bad start as she was unable to hold her first service game against the Frenchwomen. Nevertheless, the dominating style of play continued well into the second set and Razzano
was capable of holding her serve in the second game. By the third game Vinci had double faulted on her second serve and Razzano capitalized on the mini break to   take a lead of 3-0.
In the last three games, Razzano threw big serves and crosscourt shots, to not only win on her own serve but also landed all her opponent’s service games and bagged a bagel set victory of the second set.
Next up for the Frenchwomen is either Chanelle Scheepers or Monica Niculescu in the third round of the event.
