Virginie Razzano stands successful against Alberta Brianti in the opener – AEGON Classic 2012
Unseeded in the tournament draw, the French veteran, Virginie Razzano, had a perfect start to the grass-court season and outplayed the unseeded Italian opponent, Alberta Brianti, in the opening round of the AEGON Classic on Tuesday.
The 90th ranked Frenchwomen took one hour and 19 minutes to wrap up the brawl in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to register her first grass court victory of the running season.
Being held at the Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham, England, the AEGON Classic is a vital stop for all the players before stepping on the glorious courts of Wimbledon Championships in London. Razzano has been in a poor form
throughout the circuit but had least trouble in disposing off the 32-year-old Italian comprehensively. She had already defeated Brianti way back in 2004, when she registered a thumping 6-1, 6-2, victory over her in the round of 16 in Biella, Italy. Razzano’s
victory not only gave her a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series against the Italian but also levelled her season’s winning record to 10-10.
The 29-year-old French had an ordinary serve precision of just 56 per cent in the matchup but clinched 25 out of 35 first serve points en route to victory. She nailed four out of seven break points in the contest, whilst her opponent
could only convert two of her seven opportunities to finish on the losing side in the end.
"I went home for a few days after playing Roland Garros and took some time to enjoy the victory over Serena, just seeing my friends and seeing everyone at home," Razzano commented after her victory. "I have the DVD of the match
- I have not had time to watch it yet because I had to pack and get everything ready to come here, but when I have time I would love to relax and watch the match."
Razzano is slated to face this year’s French Open doubles champion, Roberta Vinci, in the second round of the AEGON Classic. Being the fourth seed in the tournament, the Italian received a bye to have a direct access to the second
round of the tournament.
