I am considering homeschooling but I am not confident I can do it without a qualified help . Is there an affordable Christian virtual school other than Abeka and BJ . I cannot afford these. My son will be in Kindergarten .

  1. Listen to the first two responses, you CAN do it without qualified [sic] help. Your son learnt to talk without a professional teacher didn't he? Everything after that is a piece of cake by comparison! Better to spend what money you've got on paint, paper, pens, glue and some nice books.

  2. I agree with curly.  K is easy (though it doesn't seem like it before you take the plunge); it's a bit of skills work and a lot of play and discovery.  There are lots of curriculum choices out there that will plan and script it all out for you, if you're not sure what to do.

The first year can be a bit intimidating - I remember my son's first year, in 1st grade.  I was scared witless!  The thing to remember is to not overload your child with workbook-type work - it's really not necessary.  They'll build on their skills each year, and you'll see your child developing according to their ability levels - even if those don't always line up with the public school scope and sequence.

curly gave you some good resources, I'd also suggest Homeschooling the Early Years.  I think it's by Linda Dobson, it should be at your Library.  Also, the Ultimate Homeschooling Handbook (I think that's the title) by Debra Bell is very helpful.  Both of them gave me great ideas - and boosted my confidence - during my first couple of years.

    Hope that helps!

  3. Maybe all you need is confidence, not an expensive curriculum.  Check your local library for books on homeschooling.  Anything by John Holt or Gatto would be great!

Also join a local homeschool support group and ask what others use or if there is a used curriculum sale.

You can homeschool your son.  If you have done it for the most important five years of learning, you can continue.

    Good luck :D

  4. I started homeschooling my oldest when he was in Kindergarten and it was easy and fun.  As his mom, you are all the "qualified help" you need.  Here's some info on that:

Teaching a child basic math and reading is VERY easy.  For a kindergartener I would start by choosing a math and phonics program.  We used Abeka, but eliminated some of the time consuming, classroom like activities.  You don't have to go with Abeka.

There are MANY great programs available.  To save money, you can use your library or buy used curriculum.

In addition to math and phonics, I would add in time for reading fun books together, going on nature walks, going on field trips and outings, and enjoying each other as a family.

Don't waste these years sitting in front of a video.  Relax and have fun with your child.  You can do it!
