Virus - Win32/Adware.Virtumonde + Win32/PrivacyRemover.M64?

Please help me!

I have just recently gotten a virus, my desktop wallpaper has been locked to a windows warning message saying: "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer." Then below that it lists 2 files: "Warning! Win32/Adware.virtumonde detected on your computer" then it has: "Warning! Win32/PrivacyRemover.M64 detected on your computer" Every now and then i get a popup asking me to install some anti-virus xp2008, and also, when i go on the internet browser it redirects me to random websites. I don't know what to do please help me! Thanks in advance.

I have had this malware on my laptop for the last few days, and it has been driving me crazy.

My symptoms were:

- could not access Hotmail account

- desktop image changed

- Mozilla/IE being redirected when I tried to access malware removal download websites

- could not change desktop appearance

- could not set system restore points or restore my system

- interference with certain software, such as Intel ProSet Wireless

I tried running a few different antivirus type programs:

- AVG free (did not detect it)

- Ad-Aware (detected it, but even after removing/quarantining it, it reappeared)

- SpyHunter (detected it, but I was using the trial version, so no removal)

- I tried to search for the source files in System, but with no luck.

Eventually I came across a post that suggested using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I downloaded it (it's free), updated it as directed and ran a full scan. The scan took some time (about 80mins), but it detected it, and when I removed it using Malwarebytes, it actually removed the virus/malware.

My system is now completely back to normal - I would highly recommend Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as it is free and did the job for me.

Just a note - whilst running Malwarebytes, if you don't move the mouse around for a while a screen saver will appear. It is a BLUESCREEN simulator embedded into the malware, and will show the error as something like "PANIC_EMBED" or similar. If this appears, it is just a screensaver, and you can press any key to get out of it. Do not reset your computer, as this will terminate the virus scan that is running in Malwarebytes.

Warning! Win32/privacyremover.M64 is a new Fake message which is associated with AntivirusXP2008, Antivirus XP 2008, Antivirus 2008, Antivirus 2009. Rogue AntiSpyware software. The message says:

“WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer.

Warning! Win32/Adware.Virtumonde

Warning! Win32/privacyremover.M64“.

Usually, when you see a message like this in your PC it is usually a desktop background which was changed to such writing, as described in the warning above. There is, though, a small but crucial difference between the reality and the suggestion, namely, this warning message was produced by a trojan, o another malware to trick you into buying the related useless and harmful products like AntivirusXP2008, Antivirus XP 2008, Antivirus 2008, Antivirus 2009. Do not trust the warning and remove Win32/privacyremover.M64, and the related software, as soon as possible.

Update your Anti Virus and Anti Spyware

Turn off System restore

Start Computer in Safe Mode

Scan with Anti Virus and Anti Spyware

After scan is finished and you have deleted the Maleware

Restart computer set a new restore point and delete all previous points.

Rescan with Anti Virus and Anti Spyware.

If you do not have Anti Virus or Anti Spy Ware I recommend Avast and Spyware Terminator. Both are free.

You were correct in that downloading the suggested program would harm your PC more.  Firstly- you don't have any viruses besides the one changing your wallpaper

Second-download Spybot Search & Destroy and run a scan.  Remove what it shows as being a threat.

Good that you didn't download the anti-virus thing... you are right that it would do more damage.

Remove it as shown by other posts, but FYI: Virtumonde is installed every time you visit any AOL news link. It took me a while to locate the source of this annoying trojan, and now I get my news elsewhere. AOL users beware...
