I am curious to know if a visa travel money card would be wise to take when I go to Puerto Vallarta? Or if they will accept that type of card? It sounds like a GREAT idea as opposed to cash.

  1. As long as you have the Visa logo, it will be fine. I would still suggest that you carry American dollars with you for smaller purchases such as souveniers, drinks, etc. Dollar bills are great for gratuities. You will have better savings if you use pesos, but American dollars are excepted everywhere, and it is appreciated by the Mexicans because our dollar is worth more. You can figure, $1 USD will be about $10 MXN. So, $5 USD will be about $50 MXN. It's easier to go with the rounded amount, when trying to guess what the cost is. Businesses will always round up to their benefit, so go armed with the knowledge of the exchange rate.

I just returned from Puerto Vallarta (I am a group coordinator and we do a lot of groups in  Mexico.) I didn't use any Mexican Pesos. I used my Visa credit card and American Dollars. I was there for 6 days. My credit card company had additional fees for the exchange, which is common.

  2. The best way to travel to Mexico is with a combination of cash (bring some small bills for tips, small purchases etc) ATM card and credit card. Just remember ATM's disperse pesos not dollars. Take what you need for a couple of days. Not everyone accepts credit cards either so be prepared with cash or pesos. Always count your change. The exchange rate is about 11 pesos =1 dollar.

I would not bring a travel card. Not everyone excepts them but it would not hurt to call the corporate office and see if they are acceptable in third world countries.

Have fun and enjoy. Love Puerto Vallarta)

  3. I found that Visa travel money card works just like credit cards. You can get the best exchange rates for pesos by using an ATM. Many businesses do not accept credit cards because they are charged a very large fee by the banks, so you need pesos. Please do not tip in US money. It shows disrespect for Mexicans. You are in their country. Also it is very difficult for working Mexicans to get to the bank, and to stand in long lines to exchange their money. They might have to take a bus to the bank and another to go home. If they need to buy dinner with that money, they will be very late and their families will be very unhappy. You would not want to be paid in  pesos each day and have to exchange them to be able to use them, would you?

  4. Never been there but I've been to other countries and all of them take MasterCard and Visa.  Another good tip would be to get some money in American Express Travelers Checks at your local bank.

  5. i don't think they will accept it but check with your bank they want

US or Canadian dollars but they will give you the change back in Pesos
