Visa for Germany for a very short visit?

Dear Friends,

I am a citizen of India. I have come to Canada for official work/meetings on a business visa and my stay in Canada is for 2 months. My return flight to India is through Frankfurt. So I want to visit (as a tourist) Germany for 2-3 days on my return way. But I don't have German Visa. So should I apply for a tourist visa or something else? Someone has told me that there is no need for visa if the stay is too short. Please suggest what I can do while staying in Canada. Now I am in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Please note that:

1. I have an Indian Passport,

2. NO US Visa and

3.This Canada trip is my second international trip.

  1. Your Indian passport should be good enought for you to visit Germany.  I was stationed there for 7 years and all my wife needed was a passport.

  2. In general all foreigners from outside the European Union require a tourist visa for Germany.

But there are exceptions to that rule and you don't need a Schengen visa, if:

you stay less than 90 days

and you are from one of the countries, for which the EU has abolished the visa requirement

Some of these non-visa countries are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, and United States.

Find out if your country is on the list too at the website of the German Foreign Office .

  3. There is no "too short" for a visa unless you're in

airplane transit and don't leave the transit area.

Indian citizens need a visa. A tourist visa allows

you to stay for 90 days. A transit visa for 5. Anyway

you'll need either of it. So if you want to expand your

trip you'll have to check with the embassy.
