Question:

Visa for Travelling to both Canada + US from UK?

Hello,

I am planning a holiday to Canada and I see that you dont need a visa to get into Canada if you are a British Citizen (which I am).

However, while in Canada I may pop across to New York for a couple of days before coming back to Canada and then flying back to the UK from there.

Apparantly you do need some kind of visa to do this, but I am having trouble finding out exactly how to apply for this...Any ideas ?

  1. You can join the visa waiver programme if you have a digitally readable passport. You fill in a form on the way there, on the plane or at the border. You can do this if you have no criminal record otherwise you need to apply for a visa in advance.

  2. As a citizen of the UK, you are exempt from requiring a visa to enter the US under the Visa Waiver Program. If you're driving across the border however, you will need to present yourself to the border agent and they will direct you to secondary screening to fill out the necessary paperwork. There is a fee, I believe it is $50.

  3. I'm a British Citizen, and I've recently been in Canada and traveled back and forth to the US. You don't need a visa if you have a machine-readable passport, (there is a symbol on the front of the machine-readable passports, if looks almost like a stylised camera). However, you do have to fill out some additional forms at the border when entering the US.

If you do not have a machine-readable passport, you are advised to contact your nearest US embassy for further information.
