My cousin who is an australian citizen is intending on going backpacking around a few countries, including visiting my mother in the uk.

My aunt has written to my mum saying she needs her to write a letter stating that she has known my cousin and her friend 2 years so that she can get her visa?

i know that if she just wanted to come visit here, she wouldn't need a visa.

can anyone shed some light on why my aunt believes she needs this letter from my mum.

and if my mum does write this letter, what kind of trouble can she get into if she hasnt known the other girl for 2 years.

  1. If you mum does not know the other girl, don't write the letter saying so.  That is an offence punishable by imprisonment.  Not really worth it.  You are correct, australian citizens don't need a visa to visit UK.  I applied for my working holiday visa, but i did not need someone from the UK to state they have known me for two years.  maybe your aunt is just misinformed.

  2. Hi,

Australian Citizen has the right to visit UK without applying any visa (i.e. fly and enter UK with her passport)but can only stay for 6 months. If your cousin would like to stay in UK longer than 6 mths, she has to apply a visa.

There are different type of visa:

    - Working holiday visa - if successfully applied, your cousin is able to work in UK for 1 year and stay in Uk for 2 years.

    - Ancestry visa - 5 years work and stay visa if she has a grandparents or parents who's born in UK or hold UK passport/citizenship

    - HMSP (Highly skilled migration visa) - 5 years work and stay, depending on the points your cousin can collect and the skills she has, she can apply for this

    - Work Permit -> a company in UK sponsor your cousin to be able to work and live in UK for 5 years :)

  4. I'd say your aunt is senile or nuts.

Depends on how long he's in the UK but if it's for a short time he's fine.

Check the www.dfat.gov.au website or the UK embassy website for specifics.
