Visa rule in Costa Rica....where to go after 90 days are up?

Hey everyone. I am going to Costa Rica for 6 months to do a teaching posistion at the CEC in Monteverde.

Because of the visa rule, I am only allowed to stay for 90 days before I have to leave the country and then reenter with another visa.

Any hints as to where to go? Websites, contact info, prices, general guidance?

I go to Costa Rica quite often. Iwould spend a day or two In San Jose & then go to the pacific side. There is plenty to do-rainforest-fishing-surfing volcanoes  etc Its a great country & the people are so friendly. I was their in march & will return there soon Have fun

Most tourists will head down to Panama when their 90 days are up, stay overnight at one of the border hotels, and come back the very next day.  You can leave on a Saturday morning and be back Sunday evening.  After all, the law only requires you to leave the country for 24 hours.  You can try our website, www.ticosland.com for information on hotels and travel agencies who will handle your Panama getaway.  Don't worry, our website is translated into English.  It is a directory conveniently arranged into categories.  I hope you can find what you are looking for.

First of all, congratulations on your teaching position!

This might be more general than you're looking for but here's what I can tell you: When I was in Ecuador, we were able to renew our visas when we took a weekend trip to a town near the border in Peru, then crossed back over into Ecuador. I'm sure you could find someplace near the the border (maybe a beach town) in Panama or Nicaragua that is worth visiting and do the same thing.

You can probably get by on a small budget staying in hostels and such. Just be careful at the border crossing places - some can be very shady - sometimes there are people hanging around outside that will try to "help" you with the papers to fill out. Don't let anyone touch your passport except the person who stamps it!

You should know that if you're going to Costa Rica with the intention of working there, you need to have a work permit, a visa that will allow you to work, pay for social security and taxes. Otherwise, you would be working there illegally and you'd be liable to be deported. The 90 day rule is for people from certain countries (like the US or most of Europe) that don't need a visa and are traveling for tourist purposes only (read: not allowed to work).

First off, if your from the USA you must leave for 3 days not 24 hours. I either go to Nicaragua or Panama. You can take the bus Trans Nica or Tica Bus very cheap ($26-$52 round trip).. I've never had any issues or problems with border crossings.

You should able to apply for an extension so you don't have to leave. That is something you can look into when you get here. Best of luck and good luck!!!!
