  1. Yes, if you only have South African citizenship, then you will need a Schengen visa to visit Italy (nothing needed for Switzerland).

See the following website for the Italian Embassy, London:

    http://www.embitaly.org.uk/

NOTE:  Choose/Vote for the answer beneath mine - Dognhorsemom - I know I will!

  2. All infos for Italy here: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp

If you're a South-African citizen and you live in the UK, you need

       1. visa application form

       2. recent passport-style photo

       3. passport or travel document valid for at least three months after visa expiry date

       4. return-trip booking or ticket or proof of available means of personal transport

       5. proof of available lodging in Italy: tourist vouchers, hotel booking, offer of hospitality

       6. proof of economic means of support, as per Ministry of Interior Directive 1.3.2000

       7. documentation of socio-professional standing

       8. health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency hospital and repatriation expenses

Check the site for full explanation.

  3. I'm Italian I live near the border and I travel a lot, but I've never been in the other line at the custom of the airport....but I'm sure you need to provide a valid passport or an equivalent document (identifiable internationally). If you travel for tourism your visa is available when you walk through the custom. If you enter Europe by car through Switzerland border you will have to provide your passport and occasionally your round trip air plain tickets.

    - Im reading now about the fact that you have been living in europe for 2 years so you are not technically entering europe for turism so they might find out with the computer everytime you used that passport before....so you need a valid visa to go in and out.

  4. A citizen of South Africa must have a Schengen visa in order to visit any Schengen country, which includes Italy.  Switzerland is not a member of the Schengen agreement, and you do not need a visa to travel there.

Here is more information than you ever wanted about Italy and Schengen:

    see section 2.3
