  1. The concentration camps that are AFAIK closest to Frankfurt are Dachau (near Munich) and Buchenwald (near Weimar).

Buchenwald is closer, with travel time a little bit over 3 hrs, direct ICE train from the airport every hour to Weimar. Weimar is a nice little city with an important part in German history, it is well-worth a day trip.

Most travellers however go to Dachau, since it is easy to reach from Munich. They then stay for the night in Munich. Travel time to Dachau would be about 4 hrs by fast train.

Close to Frankfurt and a popular tourist destination: Heidelberg. It is a small town about 1 hr by ICE train away. Personally I think its popularity derives to a large part from the fact that it is so close to Frankfurt, making it easy to visit for business travellers who've got a few hours to spare. The fact that US Armed Forces headquarters was located there also contributed to its fame in the English-speaking world.

If you decide to go to Buchenwald I strongly suggest you skip Heidelberg, Weimar is just as nice. Other nice places on the Weimar-Frankfurt train line are Fulda, Erfurt and Eisenach. At Eisenach there is the Wartburg castle, where Martin Luther spent a year of his live, translating the bible into modern German.

  2. Really close to Frankfurt are Mainz, Wiesbaden, both nice cities. On Saturday Mainz has a most remarkable farmers market around the cathedral. Wiesbaden is a quite elegant spa resort, at the same time capital of the state of Hessia. close to Wiesbaden is Kloster Eberbach, a former monastery. There they did a lot of the shootings of "The name of the rose"
