Hello. I will be visiting the champagne region of France. Can anyone tell me more info about visiting the Hautvilliers abbey/monastery? I need to know where exactly it is located, entrance fees, hours of operation, etc.

  1. It's located in Hautvillers just outside of Epernay (across the Marne).  Follow the road signs to Hautvillers and then the city signs to the Abbey.  It's up a narrow narrow road near the top of a hill. I know it doesn't sound overly helpful, but really, the road signs WILL get you there.

I'm not sure about exact hours of operation, but if you are there before 5pm, you probably won't have a problem.  Not sure about the exact hours, but it's such an easy drive from Epernay, through all the Vineyards, that even if you aren't there during open hours, it's easy to return and it's a lovely drive.

There are no entrance fees, but you should make a donation in their donation box as a gesture.  Remember it is a Catholic church, so its proper to have your shoulders, chest, and knees covered.

The city website is http://www.hautvillers.fr/ but I couldn't find anything directly about the church.  Perhaps you'll have better luck. . .

Oh, and a side note - don't bother with the Castellano tour in Epernay.  It's an hour of wasted time that you could have spent at a GOOD champagne house (like Mercier or Moet).  I'll activate my mail availability for a few days for you if you need any other advice or anything.  : )

Edit- Ok, so just take the info on the Abbey.  Use the link above and e-mail the town to see if they have more info.
