Visiting Jamaica, stay at a resort or with a friend?

I plan on visiting Montego Bay in June, i have two options...a resort or a friends home. Is Montego Bay pretty safe?

MoBay is fairly safe provided you are street smart.  Don't flash lots of cash, don't load yourself down with expensive jewelry, stay off unlit streets, travel in a group if possible, etc., etc., etc.  Your friend would be the best source of current information on the security situation.  One question is what will your friend think if you elect to stay at a resort instead of with him/her?  You might offend your friend if you don't stay at his house.  Staying with a Jamaican family will give you the real Jamaica view of the country--not the advertised touristy view.   Regardless, enjoy.  P.S.  If you stay with your friend, be sure to bring a gift for the family, anything from candies on up.

Depend on who you are.  Staying with a friend has many advantages. You get to be around real islanders and experience Jamaica the way local do.  There will be great home cooked meals. Lots of opportunities to visit out of the way places as well the major tourist attractions.  It will also be cheaper.

Staying at the resort has its advantages as well.  You have your complete privacy during times when you are not feeling like a people person, the resort is a more structured environment and everyone is there to ensure you have a good time, your friend's normal life still exists when you are there so his/her focus will not always be on you.  Many amenities are included in the cost of your room.

I prefer to stay with my mom and family instead of a hotel when I go back
