Visiting Lima, Peru - How do I get a cell phone for about 3 weeks and what is the price?

I will be visiting Lima, Peru for about 3 weeks and would like to get a cell phone while I am there, but without having to pay or sign for a contract. Can someone give me an idea how to go about it and how much more or less I will be expected to pay for this type of service? Thank you.

The best thing to do is to bring any cellphone you have that can be used with a SIM card. If you don't have one you can get a small Motorola C139 pre-paid from Cingular, for just $19.99 (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index....

In Peru they sell a SIM card called "TIM", is a prepaid service,   and they even activate it for you. Is fast, cheap and reliable.

Before you go to immigration at the Lima airport, there are some cellphone kiosks (Claro and Telefonica) and you can rent them then and there. No idea about the price,however everyone rents them there so they have to be good.

Ask around once you get to the airport, my uncle was there in december and he rented a cell phone from people at the airport. They charge it on your credit card though so you have to control your usage, i dont think theres any contracts. I dont know the price, but having a cell phone in Peru is pretty expensive. Like I said go to customer service at the airport, and ask them where you can rent a cell phone.

Also you can buy a cellphone triband, that it can be use in Nothr america, South america, Central america, the thing is to change the Chip (number card) from each country where you go. The cell costs around 70$, in a company, just the machine with the chip without a contract for calls, if you want to call from that cell just buy a card to load you cellphone, there are cards of 10, 20, 30, 40 until 100 Soles, also some cards are duplicate, triplicate for free for the company . I had a friend who bought that, he was traveling in America, he bought a chip in each country around 10$. Even he was in Thailand recently  where bought a chip from there and the celular phone incredibly received calls, now he is china and that's all. Ask if in your country sell that cellphone if you are from America. Just for suggest. gl
