Visiting Wellington in June?

I'm visiting Wellington - from Melbourne - in June, but only have a couple of days to do fun stuff. What would be the priority things to see or do? Also, if a local could give me some notion of the weather, that would be awesome.

  1. Wellington is wonderful!  :-)  I agree 100% with what the others have said... Te Papa is great.  You could easily spend a whole day there.   Maybe you could consider spending a few hours exploring Courtenay Place and Cuba Street, having lunch and then spending the afternoon at Te Papa.  The next day you could maybe going from the cable car in Lambton Quay up to the Botanical Gardens.

At the bottom of Courtenay Place near the Embassy theatre is a small cafe/restaurant called 'Sweet Mothers Kitchen'. I completely recommend it.  Actually, most eating establishments in Wellington are great.  The quality of the coffee is also fantastic.

It will be cold in June.  The climate is not too dissimilar from Melbourne, actually, except Wellington doesn't get the extreme heat that Melbourne does.

I hope you enjoy your time in Wellington - it's one of my favourite places in the world.  :-)

  2. It will be fairly cool and windy in June, and be prepared for possible delays at the airport if fog sets in.  So bring warmm clothes.

Yes, Te Papa is a GREAT museum, and fun to visit.  Not your typical museum.  The botanic gardens via the cable car are worth a peek.  Also there are some great food options in town, Cuba Street is a bit of a hub for 20-30 somethings, with fun shops and good food.  h**l Pizza is great, as is Molly Malones pub.  Don't be afraid to get out on foot and walk through town, it's a friendly city and extremely safe by any comparison.  Pick up a local paper when you arrive to see what's going on while you're there.

    Have fun!

  3. To be honest, probably similar weather to Melbourne in winter maybe slightly cooler. In winter it's prone to storms, high winds and heavy rain. Snow never happens tho. Expect temperatures of between 10-14degrees.

  4. It is quite windy in Wellington, and coming from a hot place you will definately need a jacket or you will freeze. It will be about 12-15 degrees on a nice day, as Wellington is on the sea front.

Things you must do while you are in Wellington is visit Te Papa, Wellington Cable Car. There are so many different things to do, but you have to discover them. The museum of City and Sea is quite interesting :)

    Have fun!
