can i walk across beijing? I am looking for hostels for a week and not sure how close i need to be to the main epicenter of the touristy stuff. In paris and such its easy enough to trek half the city in an hour so its not a big deal where the hostel is. Is beijing just as easy to traverse with the subway or just wakling to the destination?

  1. You can walk - in combination with the subway. When we were tired we entered any bus heading in the right direction and getting off when we wanted to. It's really cheap!

So i would suggest to search a hostel near a subway.

    Maybe this site helps you:

  2. I was mugged in Beijing during my last trip. Don't flash your money and keep a spare wallet with just a little cash in case you are robbed. You can walk around but taxis are very cheap. Beijing is a big place and many of the spots you will want to see are a good distance from each other. Be aware that most taxi drivers do not speak English but you can use cards or maps to show them where you want to go.

  3. This is a safe site, I've used many times so far.

If I were in you I'd definetely chose a place near the main stadium for 2008 Olympics http://www.booking.com/searchresults.en....

Don't miss the "Dans la ville chinoise" a 2,000m exhibition about the latest transformations of the city. See http://www.citechaillot.fr/exposition/ga... for additional details.

Bottom line: you need to move with the subway.

    All the best.

  4. The city is to large to walk to see everything.  The subway is very clean and easy to navigate.  Most tourist sites you will need to take a bus or cab to get to.
