Question:

Visiting the U.K. where should I go?

My cousins and I are going down to the U.K. for our 18th birthday. Our parents haven't purchased the tickets yet and they asked us where we would like to go.

So, this is where I ask all you Brits (sorry if that isn't the right term). Where would be a fun place to visit for three eighteen year olds. Was thinking London but a couple of people have told me London is just like visiting New York.

We will be going down there in mid August for about 8-10 days and we will be 18 when we are down there.

One more question do Britans dislike Americans? I went to France one year ago to visit my brother who was stationed down there and lets just say the French didn't treat us too well when they found out we were Americans.

I asked this question earlier but somehow it got deleted and I wasn't able to view the answers.

Thanks for the help.

  1. London is great for a couple of days, but it's huge, noisy and busy like any other big city. I'm a bit biased because I live up here, but you could visit the North West of England - Liverpool, Manchester and Chester are all great cities all within a 40 mile or so radius.

Then you could head up to the Lake District, which is beautiful, or Newcastle, or Glasgow or Edinburgh in Scotland.

Or, head west from London - Bath is amazing, and Bristol is a nice city.

You will find British people very friendly, especially us northerners, just don't wear "I Love George Bush" T-shirts!

    Have a great trip!

  2. i could spend weeks, just in york, newcastle, yorkshire, cumbria, northumberland.

  3. Visit london but dont be thinking im going to england....london! Go up north go to places such as Leeds,Doncaster,Sheffield,liverpool,Manc...

they all have there own personality and all easily linked via train and bus. And another big benefit..its cheaper then london from drinks, food, hotels, cost of living etc

You can also visit newquay or brighton for a nice look at our beaches, visit Bath, bristol

there are lots of places id be open minded and look beyond london

    Good luck and have fun

PS...if your coming in August your just in time for the football season,so get yourself to a football match no matter where you are. it dosnt have to be manchester united or chelsea, go to any game even lower league, youl love the atmosphere and the build up and post game atmosphere.

  4. Hi .... My advice is to stay well away from the cities ... London, Manchester, Birmingham etc.

Head for the real England, Go to the Lake District.

You will have a fantastic time I promise you, so much to do ... great Scenery, Great Restaurants and bars, friendly (even to Americans). See the real Britain green rolling hills, beautiful Lakes, Check this site out http://www.lake-district-links.com

Its well worth the travel and you will be able to say you have seen the real England.

Wherever you go in the world nowadays, all the cities are the same .... there is nothing like the lake district ... its unique.

good luck and have a great time.

  5. Dont forget to visit Leeds and Warwick castles (if you like castles, of course......) See web page of Golden Tours and you will see the best places for daily trips from London.

People in England are very kind. Im from Argentina and i speak only a little of english, but when i stayed there i felt fine everywhere. Enjoy your travel, England is a beautiful place with beautiful people.

  6. Depends what you are looking for? 8 - 10 days isn't a long time.

London is nothing like New York, it is only similar in population size. I mean, London is crazy busy. It has alot of historical sites and the nightlife is the best in the world! No bull Sh#t! You can do alot in London in 8 - 10 days but having said that it is the second most expensive city in the world and your cash will simply evaporate. If your looking for a party and meeting heaps of girls, then London is the spot for you.

Otherwise head to places like Bath, York and Manchester. All towns are very historical and interesting. They are all worth seeing. Or maybe you could fly (cheaper than train) up to Edinburgh for few nights. Its a great city and great nightlife.

You also need to know that traveling by train is expensive and it is cheaper to take the bus or fly. Or you could hire a car for a week and just cruise around. Check out megabus... Cheap way to get around the U.K. http://www.megabus.com/uk/

Also, didn't the Americans declare war on France back in the 1700's when the USA was still an English colony? Maybe that has something to do with the French not liking Americans. Don't worry, they don't like the English either... nobody does!

  7. Manchester.

  8. i personally don't like London. I think it's too much of a tourist trap.

i think the North of England, Scotland and Wales have much more to offer in terms of history, scenery, and modern cities

my personal favourite is Manchester. A good vibrant city with excellent nightlife (which because you will be 18, you can enjoy)

and most Britons are fond of Americans and you won't have too much of a problem here

  9. It's common knowledge French don't like Americans, what do you expect when Americans renamed French Fries to Freedom Fries.  If you're worried about French not liking you then don't go to Paris, instead you can get the Eurostar to Belgium - and experience some great beer and chocolate mmm.

London is a great place for 18 year olds.  There's Maddam Tussads, London Dungeon, Tower Castle, Camden markets... so many things to do.  I haven't been to New York but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have changing of the guards.  You could take a day trip to Stonehenge.  An overnight trip to Brighton.  August is a great time to be travelling.

  10. Britons do not generally dislike Americans, as for good places to visit it depends on what you want culture and beautiful buildings or night life.

You could visit Paris, it's only just over 2 hours away on the Eurostar train which is not overly expensive, whilst Brussels is only 1 hour 50 minutes away by Eurostar.

London is a great city, it's not as built up as New York and has much more history, as well as a vibrant nightlife.

In terms of cultural places Bath, Cambridge, York, Durham, Edinburgh, Startford Upon Avon, Oxford, Chester, Canterbury are all worth a visit.

In terms of nightlife London, Brighton, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Nottingham, Bristol or indeed Paris and Brussels (both within easy travelling distance from London) are all good cities.

  11. Firstly British people would welcome americans and a lot of females would find your accent s**y.

    Places to visit..

London is a must it is one of the world's greatest cities and is best seen with someone who lives there so if you can get a guide through the Net try to organise that.

Other great cities to try and get to see are York, Norwich ( my favorite ) as well as the towns of Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick. There are so many great places to see and visit and normally the further you go north the friendlier the people get.

    Have fun and be safe!
